Tanks are a definite no because they're too slow. The Boom Beach Dev Update is OUT and we have a TON of new content. I could see Smoked Warriors being really good thanks to their speed, but I have yet to try them in Warships mode. I'm currently using the good old Heavy Zooka strategy, which offers the power to blast through bases but isn't as mobile as needed to win some of the shootouts at higher ranks. Offensively I think my biggest issue is speed, rather than power. Thus far on Warships I'm at rank 12 with a roughly 66% win percentage. It might eventually get stale like other areas of BB, but for now it provides something to do when you log on and find yourself with no PVP/NPC/events/Ops/Crabs to play around with, so it's nice. The boosts stack additively, meaning that multiple nodes in the Tech Tree that boost the same stat will result in a total boost equal to the sum of all the nodes' individual boosts.
Each node in the Tech Tree offers up to 50 boost on a single stat. Just wanted to start out by saying Warships is actually kinda fun. In Warships, you can boost the health and damage of troops and buildings, and Gunboat energy, through the Tech Tree, instead of Statues.
